The model had been relatively unchanged for decades, with very little expected from grocery stores other than stocked shelves, fresh selections, and short check out lines. Then, online grocery sites like Peapod, Fresh Direct, and Amazon Fresh started delivering directly to people's homes, completely eliminating the need to trek outside and schlep heavy shopping bags home.
